Political Doom Thinking: How to Help Clients Break the Obsession

Question:

What approach for political doom thinking? I have a client who can’t stop thinking about (US) politics.

Answer:

I’d suggest you try to reduce the consumption of it. When news stories are blasted at you 24/7 even trivial things seem massively important. No matter how important things are, the news outlets and commentators have the same amount of time/space to fill each and every day, so everything is portrayed as being of equal importance. As these events are the reason these news agencies/pundits exist, the importance level they are given is always VERY IMPORTANT!!! The truth of the matter is the vast majority of these ‘highly important’ things will have little to no direct impact on us or our lives.

Lean into other, healthier, interests and hobbies, socialise with friends, and as the old saying goes “accept the things you cannot change” worrying about them will not make any difference to them at all.

From a hypnotherapy standpoint, I’d suggest working on acceptance, but also include plenty of ego strengthening to make the client happier and more comfortable with what, and who they are, rather than focusing on what politicians are currently up to.
